She was born in Winnipeg but brought up in Wellington the city where she was born, she made her first acting appearance in The Piano. Paquin appeared as Jane Eyre's title character as a teen in Franco Zeffirelli's Jane Eyre (2000) and the main role in Fly Away Home (2000). Paquin played a minor role in the TV film of 1997 adaptation of Carson McCullers' novel The Member of the Wedding. The actress also played the Queen of Spain in Steven Spielberg's Amistad (2007). The actress played teens in the films of Hurlyburly (1998), She's All That (2000), A Walk on the Moon (2000) and played the character of the polexia Aphrodisa groupie on the screen in Almost Famous (2000).
