Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency - a not-for profit educational site that explores female representations in popular cultural narratives is founded and is directed by Sarkeesian. Aiming to break down the stereotypes of women that have been portrayed in pop culture she also works to highlight issues related to targeted exploitation of women as well as other classes of people in the online environment. Sarkeesian, who holds an MA in the field of Social and Political Thought from York University, is a sought after public speakers. She has spoken at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival and the United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. While a student at university Sarkeesian was concerned about issues related to gender equality and the rights of women from a young age. The ambitious lady planned to start a web-based series that would examine the gender roles in video games. She ended up being the victim of a harassment online campaign. The attack did be a deterrent, but it made her more determined to be a feminist media critic. Her notable contributions to the field of feminists are recognized with numerous prizes.
